Barking Problems – Handling A Puppy That Barks For Attention

It can be quite an upsetting experience for new dog owners, to handle their new puppy‘s loud barking. Young puppies start barking and yelping as soon as they arrive in their new home, and most new dog owners are not prepared for this. There are even some puppies that bark throughout the night too, and never quiet down for their new owners.

Puppies go through a huge phase where they are afraid to be alone. This means they will bark even if you just leave the room or their sight for a minute. You don't even have to leave the home for them to become afraid. This is because they are so used to having their mommy, brothers, and sisters around constantly, and now they are gone.

What you do when faced with this problem? You will spoil your puppy if you run to him and hold and pet him whenever he barks, this will just reinforce this bad behavior. You also can't ignore him and let him bark constantly, as this will aggravate everyone in your household.

But there are other alternatives and here are a few tips to help with your new puppy‘s barking phase.

Try to ignore your puppy's barking if you can, and avoid yelling at him. The yelling will make him more afraid and he might run from you, and he will just be more anxious and bark more.

You can also buy a teaching lead that lets your puppy stay near you constantly in your home. This tool allows him to remain secure with you, and to gain his own independence at the same time.

Avoid all drawn out and long departures, when leaving your puppy at home without you. These kinds of departures add more anxiety to your puppy, and he will associate this with your leaving. You should also avoid the same kinds of welcome home scenes.

You can use a small water bottle and spray him, to stop your puppy from barking too. You can even shake a can that has items like pebbles or pennies inside that makes a loud noise. Throw the can near him so it will divert his attention and startle him at the same time. Be careful not to hit your puppy.
