The Bearded Collie's exact origin is not known with certainty, it is estimated that this dog was probably one of the following two breeds: the Magyar Komondor or the Lowland Polish Sheepdog. We know with certainty, There are specific documents that ascertain that two Polish Lowland Sheepdogs made their way to Scotland during the year 1514, where Polish traders brought the dog. While many dogs resembling the Border Collie were drawn in the artwork of 18th century paintings, no real evidence of this breed surfaced or was officially published until the early 19th century. Bearded Collie dogs were hard working dogs that herded sheep and drove cattle through rough terrain. They were tough and seemingly tireless during these long journeys. Its job as a dependable herder lasted for quite some time in Scotland until soon enough, after the Victoria era, Bearded Collie dogs soon gained favor as a show dog. After World War I was over, The Bearded Collie was valued once again for it's hard work as a herding dog after World War I. There herding skills were needed during this time, as much as they were needed during the 18th century. The breed was officially recognized by the AKC in 1977, when breeders interested in showing the Bearded Collie brought them to America and England. Bearded Collie Personality Bearded Collie dogs are considered overly excitable, playful, and with high energy levels. They are independent thinkers and usually the center of attention. They have an amazing sense of humor and are easy to train because of their high intellect. They do love children, but might be a little too rambunctious for very small children, as they might try herding the children while playing. Caring For Your Bearded Collie Since the Bearded Collie is a very energetic dog, they need many long walks or jogs each day. As with any family pet, they should remain inside at night time with your family, but can stay outside in the day time during cool weather, and heat to a certain degree. They need to be groomed and brushed about every other day. Health Facts Most healthy Bearded Collies usually have a lifespan of 13 to 15 years. They have no main health issues, but sometimes they have a few minor health problems. These include CHD, Addison's, epilepsy, colonic disease, and pemphigus. |
