One of the most primitive and oldest of all dog breeds is, the Basenji. They were discovered in the African Congo by Pygmy hunters. They were uses as pack hunters, by early tribes, to steer game into their net traps. During the 1800s, the Basenji dogs were brought to England, and most died from distemper in the 1900s. However, during the middle 1930s, many were successfully brought to England and became the model for all future breeds. This was when the name "Basenji" became their official name. This name means bush thing, and more Basenji were then sent to England and soon to America. Their popularity rapidly grew and they soon became a common household pet. Eventually, fanciers began to enter them in the dog shows which led to more fame for the breed. They even had a book and a Hollywood movie done based on them. Personality Basenji dogs have very exuberant personalities, and often exhibit behaviors that match Terriers. They are very intelligent, curious, wise and stubborn at times. Many dog lovers compare them with cats, which are independent animals. This dog absolutely loves chasing and hunting, and will do so every opportunity he gets. So, the Basenji needs plenty of exercise, mental stimulation, and play. You will find that this breed does not bark much, if at all, and when he does, he has a short yelp like shriek. Taking Care Of Your Basenji The Basenji dog is pretty easy to maintain and keep healthy. As mentioned above, he needs daily exercise, both physically and mentally. These needs can be met by brisk walking and vigorous games of fetch or chase. It is better to keep your beloved Basenji in your house with your family at night. During the day, however, this dog likes to have the freedom to walk outside. If you have the luxury of a large fenced yard, then let your Basenji play outdoors, and make sure he has sufficient water and shade during hot seasons. Health Information Basenji dogs can live to be about 15 years old. The average age of this breed is between 12 and 13 years of age. There are some main health problems this breed faces such as, Basenji enteropathy, PRA, and Fanconi syndrome. Minor health problems include umbilical hernias, PK, PPM, and hypothyroidism. |
